NTOC Mission

1. Identify and Communicate proven benefits of Transportation Operations

The current national debate on future surface transportation policies and investments centers around the following four areas, for which the role of transportation operations is not entirely intuitive. NTOC will examine these areas and will identify and communicate the benefits provided by transportation operations in each:

  1. Sustainability
  2. Economic Growth and Competitiveness
  3. Safety for all users
  4. Livability

NTOC will identify subject matter specialists drawn from NTOC member organizations for each of these four benefit areas, who will become central points of contact for NTOC on compiling and identifying:

NTOC member groups will be asked to identify and contribute existing resources on each of these four broad benefit areas. It is anticipated that by compiling a full inventory of knowledge on each of the four benefit areas, NTOC member groups will be able to easily access and be fully informed on the latest and most relevant work being performed by the NTOC community in each of these four critical benefit areas. It is hoped that by pooling and compiling the sum of NTOC members’ knowledge, the Operations community will improve its ability to clearly and uniformly define the benefits Operations can provide in each area.

2. Develop and provide support for the Transportation Operations practitioner community through educational and technical resources

NTOC will also seek to establish an inventory of available educational and professional capacity building resources available to the Operations practitioner, define an Operations discipline, and develop a roadmap for fully developing the professional capacity of the Operations community.

3. Provide a forum for Transportation Operations leaders and stakeholders to share news, best practices, and strategies

NTOC has provided a valuable venue for leaders in Operations to meet and exchange knowledge on issues of importance and currency to the Operations community. With the new NTOC focus areas of Sustainability, Economic Growth and Competitiveness, Safety, Livability, and capacity building as priorities, NTOC will focus on compiling and disseminating this knowledge to membership through existing channels, such as the NTOC newsletter, Web site, stakeholder e-mails and webcasts.
